The Hetty & Betty Writer’s Award

The Hetty & Betty Writer’s Award is a short story competition for writers aged 18 and over from across the UK. The competition is being launched by the Whitby Literature Festival at the closing dinner on 8th November 2020.

The competition is looking for stories that harmonise with the theme of the Whitby Literary Festival “Inspired By Whitby” by being set in, or having characters that have clear links to, Whitby. The judges will be looking for stories that incorporates the character of Whitby.

Prizes:

Hetty & Betty Writer’s Award – £200

Hetty & Betty Writer’s Award Runner Up – £150

Hetty & Betty Writer’s Award Finalist – £100

The winner of the award will also be given the opportunity to read their story at the opening of the Whitby Literature Festival 2021.

The Rules – Please Read Carefully 

  • Entries must contain references to Whitby, either set in, or have references to.
  • Entries must be no more than 1000 words.
  • Entries can be written in any genre or style.
  • Entries must be the author’s own work, and must be an original piece of work.
  • Entries may be submitted from 9th November 2020
  • All entries must be submitted by 5pm on 17th January 2021.
  • The shortlist will be announced on 20th February 2021.
  • The Prize Awards ceremony will take place on  27th February 2021
  • All decisions made by and on behalf of the Whitby Literary Festival and the Hetty & Betty Writer’s Award are final.
