Stories By The Sea short story competition!

The Stories By The Sea Children’s Short Story Competition is for children aged 8-18.

There are four categories in the competition, and these are split into three sub-categories based on age.

Each sub-category winner will receive a £10 prize, and their entry will be put forward to the final stage of judging to select the overall winners. The overall winners prizes are:

The Rules – Please Read Carefully 

  • The theme of the writing competition is “Inspired By Whitby”, and entries must contain references to Whitby – for example set in, or about Whitby.
  • Written short stories must be no more than 500 words. They can be fewer than 500 words but must be a minimum of 200 words.
  • Theatrical video entries must be no longer than three minutes long. Both the script and the video of the performance must be included in the entry.
  • Animation entries must be no longer than three minutes long. The storyboard, script and animation must be included in the entry.
  • Poetry entries can either be a written entry OR a videoed performance of the reading and the written entry.
  • The entry must be the child’s own work, and must be an original piece of work.
  • All entires must clearly state in the email which category they are being entered into.
  • All entries must clearly state in the email the age of the child.
  • Entries may be submitted from 1st September. Details on how to enter will given in August 2020.
  • All entries must be submitted by 5pm on 23rd October 2020.
  • The shortlist will be announced on 31st October 2020.
  • The Prize Awards ceremony will take place on 6th November 2020 as part of the opening of the Whitby Literary Festival.
  • All decisions are final.

The Categories

Written Short Story

This category is for written short story entries. The short story can be written in any genre, for example historical, romance, horror, science fiction etc. It must contain reference to Whitby, for example it could be set in Whitby (whether modern Whitby, futuristic Whitby or historical Whitby), or it could have characters that are in some way clearly linked to the town. The short story must be no longer than 500 words, it can be fewer than 500 words, but must be at least 200 words.

Theatrical Piece

This category is for dramatical pieces that have been written and performed by either an individual child, or by a group of no more than three children. The piece can be set in any genre, for example historical, romance, horror, science fiction etc. It must contain reference to Whitby, for example it could be set in Whitby (whether modern Whitby, futuristic Whitby or historical Whitby), or it could have characters that are in some way clearly linked to the town. Both the script and the videoed performance must included in the entry. The performance must be no longer than three minutes long.

Animation Piece

This category is for animation entries that have been storyboarded, written and created by either an individual child or by a group of no more than three children. The animation can be in any genre, but it must contain reference to Whitby, for example it could be set in Whitby (whether modern Whitby, futuristic Whitby or historical Whitby), or it could tell a story from an animals perspective with regard to coastal pollution in Whitby. The storyboard, script and animation must included in the entry. The animation must be no longer than three minutes long.

Poetic Piece

This category is for poem entries. The poem may be written in any style of poetry, but must be at least 20 lines long. It must contain clear reference to Whitby.  The poem can either be submitted solely in written form, or a videoed performance of the reading of the poem can also be submitted along with the written poem.
